11 Core Exercises for Kids That Are Actually Fun

Kids playingKids are losing core strength. I hate to say it, but with the increase in device use and the lack of “old school” play activities, kids’ spines and nervous systems are taking a real hit.

I, and many of my colleagues, have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of children we see with back pain and neck pain. One of the key contributing factors is they are losing core strength which normally protects them from this kind of musculoskeletal pain.

As parents, we can help them build strength in their spinal and abdominal muscles. In the video below, I demonstrate 11 different movements for core strength. The key to working with your kids on this is that it has to be fun and brief. Short and sweet and to the point, without them really realizing that they’re exercising.

Here are some points to remember for parents:

  • don’t make it a chore or something they “have to” do
  • do these movements with them and treat it like play time
  • try a couple of them at a time, not all of them at once
  • pick and choose 2 or 3 max to do in any given play session
  • allow them to be imperfect as they get used to the movement
  • keep your play sessions brief, 5-10 minutes at most

Working together with your kids to build their (and your) core strength is one of the most important things you can do for their spinal health. They only get one spine, and it has to last their whole lives…teach them good habits now!

And if you’ve never taken your child to a chiropractor to have their spine and nervous system checked, don’t wait until there are problems. Contact our office for a complimentary consultation and case review today.
